Assignment 2:

Part 1 - Watch both the 2 minute video by Ira Glass and the 15 minute TED Talk with designer icon Milton Glaser.  On your blog, note the concepts that struck you as important in this competitive world of design.  What inspires you to learn about and do good design?

From the two videos, the things that most intrigued me were the way that Ira Glass explained design. He said that everyone has their own taste, even if their designs at the beginning aren't good; that you just have to create deadlines and push yourself to do work and you will eventually get better, you just have to work on it. In the TED talk, I found most interesting the way Milton Glaser did the assignments his boss gave him. The way he took quotes, even ones that didn't have any imagery and made something with them. The thing that inspires me most is just seeing the different styles and tastes everyone has. To find whatever fits you most, but makes you unique in the world of design.

Part 2 - Select two great designs - anything from anywhere - and explain why you selected them and discuss their designs.  Along with your explanation, post the images, giving credit to the designers.

The two designs I chose were the Baskin-Robbin logo and the Firefox logo. The Baskin-Robin logo originated from two brother in law that had the same desire, which was to create a innovated ice cream store. They were first introduced by two individuaL businesses. The original two stores were Burt’s Ice Cream Shop and Snowbird Ice Cream. In the Baskin Robin logo, there is a 31 for the 31 different original flavors they had and a 21 because Snowbird Ice Cream offered 21 flavors, which was a unique offering of that time. The second logo I chose was the Firefox logo. Firefox originated in 2004. It's original design was a phoenix, hence the "fire" speed. In 2003, it became what we know it today, Firefox. The logo was a fiery fox encircling the world, to symbolize the "blazing" speed globally.

  1. Great comments, Daisy. I actually didn't know the Firefox logo was from the phoenix concept. I learn something new every day...
